Winston Churchill to appear on new banknote

The governor of the Bank of England has announced that Winston Churchill is due to appear on a UK bank note.

The former British Prime Minister will have an image of his face printed on the next £5 note - due to be introduced in 2016 as part of a regular currency facelift.

This will be the second time Churchill has appeared on British money, having previously been portrayed on a British crown / five shilling piece coin in 1965.

The words 'I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat' will also appear across the bottom of the bank note.

London landmarks will also appear on the note alongside Churchill.

The image of the Elizabeth Tower, will have the hands of the Great Clock set to three o-clock. This is the time on 13 May 1940, when Churchill addressed the House of Commons and uttered the quote featured on the banknote.

In making the announcement, Sir Mervyn King, the Bank of England governor said: "Our banknotes acknowledge the life and work of great Britons. Sir Winston Churchill was a truly great British leader, orator and writer. Above that, he remains a hero of the entire free world. His energy, courage, eloquence, wit and public service are an inspiration to us all."
