December 23rd has been the busiest shopping day for retailers in the past two years and this is expected to be repeated this year - an average of £833,000 is expected to be spent by shoppers every minute - nearly £14,000 a second.
Experts believe there will be a large influx of shoppers today because Christmas Day falls on a Saturday this year and the bad weather has also prevented many customers from hitting the shops earlier. Even the big day itself is likely to see an online retail rush, with an estimated 4.8 million people forecast to spend around £153m on December 25.
According to the IMRG, Christmas Day has become a busy web shopping day in recent years, as people seek to snap up early sale bargains.
High street spending overall is down 0.3% from the same time last year but, levels are expected to bounce back today, as people opt to pick up gifts themselves, rather than risk them not being delivered in time for Christmas.
