UK retailers achieve best sales in six months

A revival for Britain's housing market and cooler temperatures helped retailers achieve their best sales growth in six months, according to new figures.

BDO's monthly high street tracker reveals a 3.5 per cent increase in like-for-like sales across the British retailer sector over August, reportsstandard.co.uk.

This was aided by an "exceptional" performance from homeware stores, who took advantage of improvements in the housing market and increased their sales by over a fifth - a six year-high for business. These businesses may need to organise a few more cash collections following the events of last month, which come amid signs of an economic revival.

Elsewhere dailymail.co.uk claims sales of gifts and items from department sales resulted in a 8.7 per cent hike in non-fashion sales.

Online sales grew by 26.7 per cent last month, a significant improvement on the rise of 20.3 per cent recorded a year earlier.

National head of retail and wholesale at BDO, Don Williams said that spells of cool weather had also given Brits an appetite for shopping.

"The damp weather over the past few weeks has coincided with the launch of autumn/winter lines, making these wares more popular than might have been expected," he said.

Mr Williams also noted a general improvement in consumer confidence, with people "less fearful of imminent restructurings and redundancy" as the economy shows signs of strengthening.
