UK retail sector sees another boost as hot July increases sales
The latest figures show that the UK's retail industry continues to perform well, especially within the food and drink sector.
According to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), retail sales jumped by 1.1 per cent between June and July, which is almost double the 0.6 per cent figure that analysts predicted, reports telegraph.co.uk.
The July heatwave has been cited as the reason behind the sales boost, with supermarkets in particular enjoying a growth of 2.5 per cent due to sales of food, alcohol, clothing and outdoor items.
Director general of the British Retail Consortium (BRC), Helen Dickinson, said: "These are very strong sales figures and demonstrate just how well retailers have responded to the recent good weather. By giving customers what they want to enjoy in the summer and running the right promotions at the right time, they have driven good sales across the board," reports mirror.co.uk.
Although not everyone received a boost from the sun, department stores and household goods saw a drop in sales last month.
