Jane Austen could be next face of Britain's £10 note

Writer Jane Austen could be the next face to appear on Britain's £10 notes, according to comments from the Bank of England governor, Sir Mervyn King.

Sir King confirmed that Austen is the back-up face for the note, which is currently adorned with Charles Darwin's face.

His comments come after speculation that if plans to replace Elizabeth Fry with Winston Churchill on the £5 go ahead, the Queen will be the only female face to appear on any bank note in Britain, reports.

Churchill could make his debut as soon as 2015 or 2016, reports suggest - although Sir King revealed that it would be "extremely unlikely" that there will ever be a time in which no females feature on Britain's bank notes.

Speaking to the Treasury Select Committee, Sir King confirmed: "Any time we produce a note there are always two notes we have running in parallel - the figure we are actually using and a reserve figure, so if there are technical problems with the first note, we can run with the second.

"That second figure often becomes a figure on the following note. The figure that we've been working with for two years, we've said already that it's a woman - I can tell you today it's Jane Austen," he stated, cited by

However Sir King did add that there are no immediate plans to remove Elizabeth Fry from the £5 note and suggested that if the change does go ahead, notes with Fry on will continue to circulate in the population for some time to come.

He concluded by saying: "Jane Austen is quietly waiting in the wings."
