Security chiefs confident crime will drop during Olympics

Security chiefs in London are confident that crime will drop during the Olympics.

Members of the British Transport Police, London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade and NHS London all gathered in front of the London Assembly to report on their preparations for Olympics 2012 late last week.

Many of the speakers at the event claimed that the capital's security teams were confident but not complacent about their ability to keep the capital safe.

Victoria Borwick, who is Chair of the Health and Public Services Committee, was one of the attendees at the meeting. In an interview with Fresh Business Thinking, she explained the importance of security teams being well prepared

She said: "Londoners need to know that their health and emergency services should be available just as they are any other day of the year. That's why it's reassuring to see the sheer scale of planning and preparation the emergency services have put into managing the impact of the Games.

Metropolitan police assistant Chris Allison told the Assembly that police had learnt plenty of lessons from the London riots and would be using this additional knowledge during the Olympics.

He told The Guardian: "We have always planned for making sure we had resources to deal with protest and potential disorder."

Allison claimed that the police were studying the security efforts at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, where overall levels of crime dropped quite significantly.
