Easter sunshine could be just the ticket for UK retailers

With the Bank Holiday fast approaching this Easter Weekend, and then another four day break the following weekend too, retailers are not entirely sure how the consumer will react over the next fortnight.

Certainly the current heatwave plays into retailers’ hands in some ways – sending shoppers scurrying to the shops for summer essentials, whilst the supermarkets and DIY specialists are not only stocking up on gardening essentials – the usual Easter break activity – but supplementing that this year with promotional activity around barbecues and garden furniture as the public embraces the warm weather.

Sunshine could bring retailers a bountiful holiday

And, whilst the extended breaks and warm weather encourages people to get their friends round for some al fresco dining, the fact that many shoppers will also be celebrating the Royal Wedding with street parties – whether they are Royal fans or not – means that such retailers are likely to boom.

But as ever, Bank Holidays are also a time when the public shops. And whilst the Easter break places legal restrictions on when stores open by the following weekend there will be no such restrictions with retailers and shopping centres able to open according to their normal hours.

Whether the great British public do hit the shops or not remains to be seen – just like Christmas, extended breaks can prove a challenging time for families desperate to keep everyone amused and after the parks and picnics a little retail therapy often follows.

This year though it is likely to be the weather that dictates the opportunity for huge sales over the double Bank Holiday period – and it will be up to the retailers to maximise the opportunities open to them through proactive promotions and merchandising.

Let's keep our fingers crossed, eh!
