Royal Wedding £5 coin will be struck in platinum

The commemorative Royal Wedding £5 coin will be struck in platinum, providing a unique way to mark the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

An artist's impression of the official design for the coin, depicting the happy couple with the date of their wedding inscribed around the border, has been revealed by the Royal Mint.

As well as the platinum edition of the coin, of which just 200 will be made available, there will also be sterling silver and gold-plated silver proof versions of the commemorative item.

It will weigh 94.2g, twice the weight and thickness of a normal £5 platinum coin, and is 38.61mm in diameter.

The image on the reverse of the coin was designed by sculptor Mark Richards and shows the pair in profile, while the obverse of the platinum coin will have Ian Rank-Broadley's depiction of Queen Elizabeth.
