Police ask public to help them protect cash deliveries

Following an increase in cash in transit robberies West Mercia Police are appealing to residents for their support.

Cash In Transit vehicles either collecting or delivering cash are often targeted before Christmas and there have already been two recent incidents in Redditch and Wythall and an attempted cash machine theft in Frankley.

Detective Inspector Tim Bower, Force Intelligence Bureau, said: “There were no such incidents at all in 2009 in the whole of Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin while there were four in both 2007 and 2008.

“However, we have had eight offences so far this year, with these recent crimes in the north Worcestershire area the latest.. We believe those responsible are criminals travelling into our area to commit the robberies from as far afield as Manchester and Liverpool.”

West Mercia Police has an ongoing campaign called Follow That Van where officers in uncommitted patrol cars follow vehicles to ensure safe deliveries, reassure drivers and act as a clear deterrent. Officers on foot patrol also give similar support if they come across a delivery or collection taking place.

Det Insp Bower added: “We are doing what we can to maximise police patrols and visibility, and arrest and charge offenders.

“We will also act on any intelligence we gather and this is where the public can help. We are appealing for the public to be vigilant because any information they pass on can help predict who is planning what and where and stay one step ahead of the criminals.”

Dick Hanks, police liaison manager for the British Security Industry Association, said: “Cash in transit attacks cause injury and trauma to couriers and put members of the public at risk so it is extremely important this crime is combated. The West Midlands is one of only two areas in the country to have seen a rise in the number of cash in transit attacks this year, so it is very important the public do what they can to support West Mercia Police tackle these crimes.”
