Managing cash in society

Case Studies

East Midlands Trains kept on track by an efficient cash in transit service

With a relationship spanning 15 years, Loomis and East Midlands Trains have worked together to improve cash flow efficiencies for the national transport company. Over the years this has resulted in an expansion in the services Loomis provides.

The challenge

East Midlands Trains, part of the Stagecoach Group, runs fast, frequent services between London St Pancras International and key destinations throughout the East Midlands.

The company was awarded the franchise to take over the running of these services on 22 June, 2007.

Beginning service on 11 November, 2007 East Midlands trains has since worked hard to improve punctuality, reliability and facilities at their stations and on board their trains.

When commuters and travellers are waiting in the queue to buy a ticket for travel the last thing they want is to be held up by a coin jam in the ticket machine or a lack of change in the ticket office itself.

An efficient cash in transit solution was therefore vital for the smooth running of the company’s stations.

JD Sports races ahead with a constantly evolving cash solution

When JD Sports saw that Loomis continually invested in its business, and was offered the exceptional service levels and competitive pricing it needed, the company knew it had found the right cash management partner.

The Challenge

National retail giant JD Sports has grown hugely since its first store opened in Bury in 1981 – it’s now the leading UK specialist multiple retailer of fashionable branded and own-brand sports and casual wear.

It expanded principally in the North and Midlands in the 1980s and was floated on the stock market in 1996. By the 90s had begun its march south and started on an aggressive acquisition strategy. That saw it add 200 stores in 2002 with the acquisition of First Sport, with a further 70 stores coming from Allsports in 2005. The outlets, almost all of which converted to the JD Sports brand, gave the firm its present-day total of over 600 stores (including those of the French brand Chausport).

Today, JD Sports Fashion is 57% owned by Pentland Group – and has been since since mid 2005.

It was at that time that JD Sports, fed up with experiencing service interruptions and a lack of attention to customer service, decided to put its cash collection requirements out to tender.
